An Alternative Solution for Speech and Sound Learning

Scentific research revealed that considerable auditory plasticity exists in cochlear implant listeners, even after years of experience with their device. While "passive" learning may allow for some adaptation, "active" auditory training may better exploit listeners' auditory plasticity. There is much evidence in studies that auditory training can improve speech and music perception, even after years of experience with a device and/or signal processing strategy. As advances in CI technology seem to be reaching a point of diminishing returns, auditory training may provide the most cost-effective approach to maximize the benefit of cochlear implantation. Advances in computer technology have contributed greatly to the latest-generation cochlear implant and/or hearing aid technology. These advances also have allowed for the development of important rehabilitation tools, which may ultimately provide the greatest benefit for those hearing impaired who have difficulty with their device. Motivation is an important factor in successful patient outcomes. With the right tools and resources for auditory rehabilitation, cochlear implant and/or hearing aid users may find the necessary motivation and momentum to get the most from their implant and/or hearing aid. Inconvenient solutions is a mobile division of TigerSpeech Technolog Inc., which is dedicated to develop innovative speech software to faciliate the learning of speech and sounds, especially for hearing impaired people. The software is not only suitable for hearing impaired people, e.g., cochlear implant users, but also is suitable for anyone who want to improve the speech perception (second language learning or general learning) or simply to enjoy listening to all kinds of sounds, including environmental sounds and music. The software developed by TigerSpeech Technology Inc. will be freely distributed by Emily Fu Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring Emily Fu - Love Is Forever. Helping others is life’s true meaning.

The Future Goals and Projects

The long-term goal of the Emily Fu Foundation is to provide assistance to hearing- impaired people as well as speech and/or language delayed children all over the world. The first major project has been the development and release of the Angel Sound auditory rehabilitation, which is currently targeted at adult and teen cochlear implant patients and hearing aid users. Inconvenient Solutions is to help the foundation to reach the goal by expanding Angel Sound series of rehabilitation software into mobile platform, ideally including various mobile platforms (i.e. iOS, Andriod, and Windows) as well as languages (i.e. English, Chinsese, etc.). Mobile-based Angel Sound series of rehabilitation softwares will be freely available for anyone to use. Auditory rehabilitation is both scarce and expensive for many cochlear implant and hearing aid patients. The Angel Sound software allows patients to train at their own pace, at their convenience, in the comfort of their home or anywhere with the portability of tablets and/or phones.
